Coating Technology

Easy Coater (Tape casting)

Our Easy coater can be used to perform accurate, even and repeatable coatings of any polymer, colloidal or sol-gel solution onto a suitable (rigid and semi-rigid substrate). The Easy coater is motorized and has strict settings of coating parameters, like gap and angle of the coating system.

Coatings performed in a single operation are of a small scale but performed to the highest precision.  The maximum substrate dimensions are 280mm x 180mm and coating thickness¡¯ can range from a few microns to a few millimeters. It can also be used to cast ceramic slurries (mixture of ceramic powder, solvents and necessary additives), into films of up to 50mm thickness.

During tape casting the ceramic slurry is spread uniformly over the surface of a horizontal substrate.  Upon drying, the flexible unfired tape can be cut and laminated, or shaped and sintered.

The Easy coater's performance has been enhanced due to recent modifications and re-engineering work made to the doctor blade and is currently in good working order. Applicable substrates include, paper, glass, polymer films, foils and other materials. Tape casting and screen printing methods can be utilised for multilayered composites.

The machine has been used to produce components for photovoltaics, circuit elements such as multi-layered capacitors, and sensors for thermoplastic processing.

The substrates are held by a vacuum table (A4 size). And the coater can be fitted with a knife, a silk screen process, roller coaters or slot bead dies.

Base Coater

Our second coating machine (the base coater) is predominately used to perform coatings on flexile substrates.

The device uses a constantly roll-on-roll coater, and is designed to coat reproducibly substrates and chemistry with a mass as low as possible. Typical working widths are 200mm to 500 mm,  and common substrates include textiles, foil, paper and non-woven films.

Attached to the machine is an efficient electrical high temperature dryer with in-built, flotation dryer, IR dryer and UV systems. Amongst other applications, the dryer can be used for the controlled curing of polymer coatings.
